Daewoong Academy Story: Honoring Joseph Daewoong Lee's Legacy

Swipe right or click the right arrow to discover the inspiring story and meaningful purpose behind Daewoong Academy →

Daewoong Academy was founded by the family of Joseph Daewoong Lee – including his cousins, sisters, and brother-in-law – in loving memory of an exceptional student-athlete who passed away after bravely confronting mental health battles. To honor Joseph's legacy, we tell the story of a young man whose passion for soccer began in first grade and blossomed into an extraordinary journey. Joseph's passion for soccer began in first grade, and his dedication to the sport led him to win the USSDA National Championship in 2015 as the starting midfielder for the Chicago Fire Academy team. He went on to play Division I soccer at Brown University, where he balanced his athletic commitments with his studies in Computer Science.

Joseph Daewoong Lee

Despite his busy schedule, Joseph always prioritized his education, often studying during breaks and before classes to maintain high grades. His hard work earned him the titles of Honors graduate and Illinois State Scholar at Vernon Hills High School in 2016. Joseph's legacy extends beyond his personal achievements; he was known for his unwavering support and encouragement of others, both on and off the field.

Inspired by Joseph's dedication to both athletics and academics, his family came together as the board of directors to create Daewoong Academy. They are committed to making education more accessible and empowering for all students. Our mission is to provide a platform where students can access free, data-driven educational resources to enhance their studying and academic performance.

Moreover, by sharing Joseph's story, we aim to encourage open and honest dialogue about mental health among young students. We believe that by normalizing conversations about mental health issues and promoting understanding and support within our community, we can help break down the stigma surrounding these challenges faced by the youth.

Founding Software Engineer 2023

Saim Ahmad has been mentored by the President of Daewoong Academy, Peter Lee, since his junior year of high school. Under Peter's guidance, Saim has contributed significantly to projects like Daewoong Academy. Saim graduated from Beckman High School in Irvine, CA, where he first became Peter's student and participated in his full-stack engineering program in web app development. Since then, Saim has made remarkable contributions, including developing the scalable test-taking feature that allows Daewoong Academy to digitize any type of exam, complete with tools such as annotation, vocabulary lookup, calculators, and more. Saim completed his undergraduate degree in computer science at UCLA and is now pursuing his master's in computer science at UCLA as well. He interned as a software engineer at Yahoo in the summer of 2023 and is currently interning at Amazon as a software engineering intern in the summer of 2024.

Hanul Ju (12th Grade Senior)

Hanul Ju (12th Grade Senior)

Founding Software Engineering/ Head of Student Teams Intern 2023

Hanul, Head of Student Teams at Daewoong Academy, has been a driving force behind the organization's success since his sophomore year of high school. As one of the first student interns, Hanul worked closely with Peter, the president of the non-profit, to lay the groundwork for the app's front and back end development. Through his years of collaboration with Peter, Hanul became well-versed in coding and software engineering skills, mastering frontend technologies such as Next.js, React.js, and Tailwind.css. He also gained expertise in designing scalable systems and implementing APIs using Node.js and AWS services. Demonstrating remarkable innovation, Hanul became the first high school student to conceptualize and develop the Vocab Set feature. Drawing from his own experience taking the digital SAT, he identified a need for a tool to help students navigate the reading section's vocabulary. Hanul's Vocab Set feature allows users to highlight unfamiliar words during the test, save them, and access their definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and usage in sentences. He even created a Quizlet-like feature that enables users to test their knowledge of selected words in their custom vocab sets. Hanul's feature surpassed the scope of existing digital SAT platforms, including the one provided by the College Board, showcasing his commitment to helping students better prepare for the exam. As Daewoong Academy's first cohort of 50 students came on board, Hanul stepped up as a technical leader. He provided guidance and support to all 50 students across 8 different teams, assisting with any technical questions or concepts each student needed help with. Hanul's leadership and expertise have been instrumental in fostering a collaborative and innovative environment within the organization.
